Any stimulant medication will effectively reduce your appetite, such as amphetamines, cocaine, cathinone’s, etc. The ones that are specifically used in exogenous obesity, or for weight loss, are the amphetamine derivatives phentermine, and phendimetrazine. These work the same way as Adderall, Ritalin, Desoxyn, and other stimulant Rx controlled substances, by acting on the hypothalamus, involving the norepinephrine neurotransmitter binding hypothalamic sympathetic neurons, thus decreasing the hunger response from the brain. Depending on how long during the day your doctor wants your appetite suppressed, he/she would choose a medication based on half-life. Bontril (phendimetrazine) has a relatively short half-life and duration of action as an anoretic medication, so if there is more than 4 hours needed of appetite suppression, then an extended release formulation of the product is needed, or another dose spaced 4 hours further from the first dose. If you are looking for a once daily drug, that will suppress appetite for a long period throughout the day, then Adipex-P (phentermine) is a better drug choice. Phentermine has a relatively long half-life (approximately 16 to 18 hours) of clinical effect as an anoretic drug. Amphetamines such as Dexedrine (dextroamphetamine), Desoxyn (methamphetamine), may also be used for this purpose for a short period of time, and has the same action on the hypothalamus as the 2 previous drugs did. There is not necessarily a better brand of diet pill, it all depends on each individual patient, and their reaction to the different medicaitons mentioned above. There is also an over the counter drug that is proven for weight loss, called Alli (orlistat). Alli causes weight loss by specifically binding to fat in the digestive system, and prevents its absorption, thus allowing fewer fat calories from being put into the system. Alli has pretty severe side effects of causing gas, and a fatty diarrhea if a high fat meal is consumed. Alli is a medication that is used, to try to retrain the brain from eating certain types of food, and in certain concentrations. I hope this information is helpful. My diet drug of choice to recommend would be Adipex-P (phentermine) if there are no cardiovascular risks or concerns.
